The client wanted to replace an ageing garden decking area that had reached the end of its life after the original timber posts, installed directly into the ground, had deteriorated over time. Having seen the shortcomings of traditional timber foundations, he wanted a more permanent solution that would not suffer the same fate.
The site itself also presented a challenge. Built on a noticeable slope, achieving a perfectly level decking area using conventional methods would have required extensive excavation, concrete or heavily stepped supports.
No More Digging South West designed a ground screw foundation system that addressed both the longevity of the structure and the site’s changing ground levels. A total of 20 RADIX 76 PRO ground screws were installed, comprising four 76 × 1250 mm screws, ten 76 × 1550 mm screws and six 76 × 2050 mm screws.
Using a combination of screw lengths allowed the team to accommodate the sloping terrain, with some screws projecting up to 800 mm above ground level on the lower side of the site to establish a single, level datum across the entire deck. Once installed, a fully levelled timber sub-frame was fixed directly to the ground screw heads, creating a robust foundation ready for the new decking.
The installation was completed without excavation, concrete or curing time, leaving the site clean and ready for the next stage of construction. Despite working through a summer heatwave, the team completed the project efficiently, delivering a strong, long-lasting foundation that will significantly outlast the original timber post installation.
