The project involved creating a reliable foundation system within a woodland environment near Cardigan. The client was developing an off-grid structure and required a foundation approach that would minimise disturbance to the natural surroundings while still meeting the structural requirements set out by the project engineer.
To ensure the design loads could be achieved, compression testing was required on site. This testing allowed the installation team to confirm that the ground conditions could support the required loads before proceeding with the full installation.
Working in woodland also required a solution that could be installed quickly and with minimal ground disruption, allowing construction to progress efficiently.
The No More Digging Wales team carried out compression testing to verify the load capacity of the ground and confirm the correct screw specification. Based on the results, 30 RADIX 2050mm ground screws were installed to form the foundation system.
Ground screws are particularly well suited to woodland and environmentally sensitive locations because they can be installed without excavation or concrete. This allowed the team to complete the installation in a single day while keeping disturbance to the surrounding landscape to a minimum.
Once installed, the foundations were immediately ready for the next stage of the build. The client was able to begin construction directly on the screws shortly after installation, demonstrating how ground screw foundations provide a fast, reliable and environmentally considerate solution for off-grid projects in challenging locations.
